Obituary:
She was born Dec. 25, 1925, in Jefferson City, and was the daughter of the late Rev. C.H. Etter and Gertude Elizabeth Baker Etter. Her family provided the following statement: "She became a Christian at an early age and united with Martha Davis Baptist Church in Jefferson City. "After becoming a Christian, she did everything she could to hasten God's Kingdom here on earth. She was a Sunday school teacher, a choir member, president of the missionary society, and was church clerk for several years. "She graduated from Nelson Merry High School in Jefferson City and from Morristown College, with honors from each. She furthered her education in other universities in the area. "She taught school in Jefferson County and after moving to Greeneville, was a substitute teacher at George Clem School for a number of years. "She was a member of Eagle Height Chapter No. 257, Order of Eastern Star, when it was active in Jefferson City. "On Aug. 31, 1948, she was united in holy wedlock to the Rev. Cecil Clayton Mills Sr. "To this union two children were born: Cecil Clayton Mills Jr. and Gary Jerome Mills. "She was active in the Bethel District Baptist Association and held many offices to include president of the young people for eight years and later becoming its supervisor. "She also served as vice president of the women's auxiliary. She also taught in the Leadership Training congress for a number of years, during the administration of moderator W.H. Stokely. "In 1956, the family moved to Greeneville, where her husband was the pastor of Friendship Baptist Church for nearly 37 years. "She became an active member as Sunday school teacher, president of the Hattie Bryant Missionary Circle and several decision-making committees. "She loved children and taught in the Head Start program for more than 28 years. She was also a Girl Scout leader. "She was honored to be elected president of Greeneville-Greene County Church Women United twice for two-year terms. "She also served on various boards, including the Nolachuckey-Holston Area Mental Health Center Board, the advisory board of Roby Fitzgerald Adult Center, and the Greeneville-Greene County Heritage Trust Board. "She was a public speaker and had spoken in every church in the Bethel District Baptist Association and other churches on special days, and also at various civic organizations." Survivors include: two sons and daughters-in-law: the Rev. C.C. Mills Jr. and his wife, Kathy Mills, and Gary J. and Melanie Mills; six grandchildren and a grandson-in-law: Nikki Mills, Heather and Gabrel Gomez, Cecil Clayton Mills III, Andrelle Mills, Jonathan Christian Mills, and Michael Mills; one great-grandson: Yordan Gomez Mills; one brother: Donald Ellsworth Etter; one sister-in-law: Faye Etter; several nieces, nephews and other relatives; and friends, which include The Friendship Baptist Church family. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three sisters: Ada Williams, Ethel Collins, and Mattie Carter; and one brother: Lincoln Etter. The Rev. C.H. Charlton, the Rev. Ken Calver, the Rev. C.C. Mills Jr., and the Rev. Carl Bragg will officiate. A committal service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Jefferson County Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be the deacons of Friendship Baptist Church Honorary pallbearers will be the pastors of the Bethel District, Dr. Dahrmen Patel and his staff, Dr. Joe Scott and his staff, the staff of Caris Healthcare (hospice) and the nurses who took care of her.
