Howard N. Gillespie, age 80, of Greeneville, passed away Monday, April 12, 2010 at Signature HealthCare. The funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM, Friday, April 16, 2010 at Jeffers Funeral Chapel with interment to follow in GreeneLawn Memory Gardens. Pastor Steve Merriweather, Pastor Paul Elmore will be officiating. Survivors include 1 daughter and special son-in-law and friend: Pam and Steve Merriweather of Greeneville, 1 granddaughter: Shayla Merriweather of Greeneville, 2 grandsons and their spouses: Steve and Cheryl Merriweather Jr. of San Diego, CA, and Ja’mon and Sarah Merriweather of Marysville, Washington, 3 great grandchildren: Kamryn, Kayleigh, and Blake Merriweather
brother: James Gillespie of Greeneville, Several nieces and nephews including a special nephew: William Gillespie of Greeneville, Former wife and good friend: Emma Perkins of Greeneville, Special friend: Marisa Black. PRECEEDED IN DEATH BY: Parents: Felix and Lora Jones Gillespie; sisters: Ruby, Juanita, Gertrude, Pauline, Ophelia Gillespie, and Hilda Pierce Arnette; brothers: William “Doodle” Gillespie, Arthur “Tump” Gillespie, Raymond “Cedar” Gillespie, Eugene “Gene” Gillespie, David Gillespie. PALLBEARERS: Nephews and Friends, HONORARY PALLBEARERS: Staff and Residents at Signature HealthCare. Mr. Gillespie Worked for Corner and Central Drug Store, Franklin Furniture, and the U.S. Forestry Service. He was a Member of New Foundation Church and also attended Tates Chapel United Methodist Church as long as his health permitted. Mr. Gillespie played in the Negro Baseball League and coached a Little League baseball team. His family stated that Mr. Gillespie “Was well known, Loved his family and Grandchildren, and that he never met a stranger.” The family will receive friends Friday from 11 AM till 1 PM preceding the funeral service at Jeffers Funeral and Cremation Service.
