George "Buck" Mathes, 86 of the Graysburg community, passed away surrounded by the ones he loved at his home. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Betty Mathes; granddaughter, Lindsay Franklin (Josh); daughter-in-law, Melissa Grissinger (Matthew); grandson, John Neal Grissinger; great-grandsons, Mathes & Brett Franklin; neighbors and friends who have always been more like family; Keith & Myna Bell Williams; Andy, Mekindra, Otto, and Townes Williams; Haley, Bryan, Addi, and Deegan Dean; a special nephew, Bill Herrell; and many other nieces and nephews.\n\nHe was loved by all who knew him and will be deeply missed. His great joy of his life was his farm and his family. He began farming at the age of 9 and farmed as long as his health permitted. He was a dairy farmer for over 45 years, raised beef cattle, countless crops of tobacco in Greene County. If he wasn't out working on the farm, you could find him in he recliner with one of his grandchildren or one of the many children they kept through the years. Children were always drawn to him and he loved them all. He was a man of his word and was always willing to help a friend or neighbor.\n\nGeorge was preceded in death by his parents, L.M. & Willie Mathes, late wife, Louise Campbell Mathes; two sons, James "Jim" Mathes and Dale Mathes; sisters, Lochiel Mason, Reba Estko, Thelma Dickerson, and Zuella Miller; and brother, Paul Mathes.\n\nFamily will receive friends Friday, March 24 from 4:00-7:00 at Jeffers downtown Funeral service to follow at 7:00pm with Rev. Keith Williams and Rev. Jeannie Higgins officiating and Bill Herrell speaking. Graveside service will be Saturday, March 25 at 11:00am at Liberty Hill cemetery. Family and friends are asked to meet at Jeffers downtown at 10:00am.\n\nPallbearers will be Josh Franklin, Matthew Grissinger, John Neal Grissinger, Andy Williams, Bryan Dean, and Buster Scott. Honorary pallbearers are Fred Begley, George Lamons, Tom Wright, Lee Duckworth, Andrew Duckworth, and John Rives.\n\nIn Lieu of Flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Liberty Hill Cemetery Fund c/o Buster Scott 320 Liberty Hill Road South Chuckey, TN 37641.
