Hugh “Gene” Shelton, 81, of the Mt. Hebron community passed away Monday at home. He will be remembered by many as a quiet, Godly man who loved his family.\n\nHe is survived by his daughter, Connie Walsh, whom he adored; his son-in-law, Will Walsh, who was like a son to him and was his best friend; two grandsons who were the light and pride of his life: Dylan Walsh, and Derek Walsh and wife Kate; sister and brother-in-law: June and Buster Rupert; brother: Rodney Landers; special cousin: Dorothy Shelton; aunts: Hilda Shelton of Greeneville and Dorothy Reese of Huddleston, Virginia; brothers-in-law: PeeWee Tweed, Jim Fox, Boyd Fox, and Carroll Woods; several cousins, nieces and nephews; and special friends: James and Betty Huff, Bob and Alice Hensley, Gary and Frances Gridley, CJ Williams, Matthew Hensley, Randall Gilbert, and Allan Grubbs.\n\nGene had a lifelong love of antique cars and made many friends through the years at car shows and rod runs throughout the region. He retired from the United States Postal Service in 2005 after 32 years of service. He was also an active member of United Baptist Church for more than 40 years. After the passing of his wife, he was a regular attendee at Central Baptist Church. He loved and enjoyed the congregations at both churches, where he was always an example of loyalty and faith.\n\nHe was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Doris; his parents: Irene and Earnest Landers, and Carson Shelton; and a sister: Tresa Ellis.\n\nVisitation will be Saturday from 5:00 – 7:00pm at Jeffers Afton Chapel with the funeral service to follow at 7:00pm. Rev. Nick Bailey and Rev. Brad Higgins will officiate. Interment will be Sunday at 2:00pm at Mt. Hebron Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Greg Nunn, Nathan Ramsey, Roger Hensley, Matthew Hensley, Jon Skidmore, Tony Fox, Jeff Tweed, Brandon Tweed, and Justin Tweed.\n\nAs Gene shared his passion of antique cars with many of you, please feel free to bring your car to visitation Saturday evening to honor his memory.
