James Leighton Brown, 82, of the Ottway community, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours on January 9th in his home surrounded by family.\nLeighton resided in Greene County his entire life. He was a veteran of the United States Navy. After his military service, he returned home and served as chief deputy for the Greene County Police department and was an over-the-road truck driver with Crete Carrier for 33 years. Everyone that knew Leighton knew of his passion for gardening and the enjoyment he had tending his many gardens.\nAs long as his health permitted, he attended and was very involved in Romeo United Methodist Church, where he served on many boards. He especially enjoyed helping make apple butter with fellow church members. Leighton made many dear friends at Romeo UMC.\nHe is preceded in death by his mother Louise Jones, stepfather Troy, Father Edgar Brown and brother Roby Brown.\nHe is survived by his loving wife of 57 years Sandra Brown, who was his constant companion and caregiver, daughters Leslie Evans (Gary) of Kingsport, Angela of Greeneville, son Roy Brown (Erin) of Charlottesville Va. Three granddaughters Jordan Sabey (Zak), Annabelle and Brynn Brown. \nThere will not be a memorial service however, friends and family are welcome to visit at Sandra and Leightons home.\nThe family would like to thank the many friends and neighbors that have reached out and helped throughout the years. They would also like to extend their gratitude to Smokey Mountain Hospice for their kind and compassionate care of Leighton in the last weeks.\nIn lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital.
