Lucille Smelcer Pierce Obituary (1921

On Tuesday, November 17, 2015, Lucille Smelcer Pierce went to be with her Lord Jesus Christ. She was born Frances Lucille Smelcer, in Dunbar, Virginia on February 22, 1921 and was the third of six children born to Charles Augusta Payne Smelcer and Lela Vandeleur Easterly Smelcer. Lucille was the wife of Kenneth Darrell Pierce of Baileyton. They had a loving marriage of 22 years. Lucille was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth Pierce, her mother Lela Smelcer, her father Charles Smelcer, her brother Frank Smelcer, her sisters Kathryn Eugenia "Jean" Smelcer Eggert, Lois Belle Smelcer Marshall Lozier and a special granddaughter, Morgan Stephenson. Survivors include her daughter Donna Stephenson, her daughter and son-in-law, Myra and Roger Moore, her grandchildren Heather and John Wilson, Matthew and Jennifer Moore and Simon Moore, three great granddaughters Miranda, Sara and Emma, a sister, Nancy Easterly of Greeneville and a brother and sister-in-law, William "Bill" Smeltzer, several nieces and nephews, and four special friends, Phyllis Tunnell, Edna Waddell, Rita Stone and Connie Brandon. Lucille graduated from Greeneville High School in 1938. After graduation, she worked at the Greene County Court House in the National Youth Administration. She then worked form 1941-1949 as a telephone operator with the Intermountain Telephone Company. In 1960, Lucille graduated from Barton's School of Hair Fashion. She owned and operated The Baileyton, in Baileyton, for 47 yearsm frin 1960-2007. She worked with some very special cosmetologists: Mabel Mclain Barbara Mclain Broyles, Phyllis Moore Hawkins and Rita Stone. Lucille loved the many patrons that came to her shop and considered them special friends. She missed them dearly after falling, breaking her leg and was forced to retire at the age of 86. Lucille served for a time as a Commissioner for the Town of Baileyton. She served for 21 years on the Baileyton Celebration Committee and was one of the major creators of the Baileyton Celebration Parade. She was instrumental in the organization of the Baileyton Area Historical Society and was a charter member of the society. Lucille was a member of the Gleaners Class at the Baileyton United Methodist Church for 67 years. She was one of a group of people that worked diligently to make the Baileyton community a better place. Pallbearers will be: Grandsons Matthew Moore and Simon Moore, grandson-in-law John Wilson, nephews Bill Easterly, Alan Smeltzer, Bill Smeltzer, Dennis Eggert, Edwin Eggert and great-nephew Alex Haffcke. Visitation will be Friday, November 20, 2015, from 4-7 at Baileyton United Methodist. The funeral will follow visitation, at 7:00, with Rev. Bill Rimmer and Wade McAmis. Interment will be at Zion Cemetery at Baileyton on Saturday, November 21, 2015, at 10:30am.
