Walter Maddox

–

Greeneville, Tennessee

Walter “Gene” Maddox, 77, of Greeneville, TN, passed forth form this earthly realm to a heavenly one on January 31st, 2022 while surrounded by his family.
He was born March 5th, 1944 in Shelby, North Carolina to Walter James and Daisy Bell Maddox before the family moved to Greeneville when he was still a small child. Gene graduated from George Clem High School in 1965. Later he perused studies at East Tennessee State University. Although visually impaired, he would later become an entrepreneur and self-employed businessman who orchestrated his business practices around investing in the community around him. He created and ran the “Ebony Shop”, a community market, hangout and arcade in the Wesley Heights neighborhood for local children to congregate and enjoy themselves. Eventually Gene left the business sector all together and focused solely on serving and giving back to the Greeneville community as a whole, from there he would work for Rural Resources as their Assistant Program Coordinator until his retirement. Gene had a passion for the sciences, from political to physics, and greatly valued education. In his younger years he was a devoted jogger and practiced karate on into his later years. He was a connoisseur of music and avid supporter of the institution of radio. He loved history and was somewhat of a local historian. His life’s legacy will be remembered for his long dedication to community servitude. Gene served as the president of the George Clem Multicultural Association and once president of the Greeneville Organization for the Blind. He was a board member of the Community Economic Development Network of East Tennessee, the Tabernacle Soup Kitchen Ministry, the Greeneville Heritage Trust, the Greeneville City Schools Diversity Committee, and former member of the NAACP. He was also a lifelong member and elder of The Tabernacle Presbyterian Church.
Gene was an only child and was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his daughter, Dale Stewart (Ozell); son, Walter H. Maddox; former spouse and lifelong friend, Anna N. Rogers Maddox; grandchildren, Chadwick Moore, Michael Hollerman, Jr., Breena Gillespie (Aaron), Desmond Maddox, Ella Maddox, Amari Maddox, and Aleia Maddox; great-grandchildren, Alex Duckett, Taylen Gillespie, and Aniyah Gillespie; his godson, Jayon Whiteside; special friends, Leon “Butch” Carson, Sally Causey, Karen Wright as well as a host of close relatives and friends.
A celebration and memorial of his life will be held at Tabernacle Presbyterian Church in Greeneville on Saturday, February 12th, 2022 @2pm; presided by Reverends John Catts and Van Scott.

The family politely requests for those in attendance to wear masks.
